(SIOUX CITY, IA) - A convicted dog killer will spend 30 days in jail for the beating death of his 5-month-old American Bulldog named "Sire."
A Judge convicted Bobby Loggins of Sioux City in January of Animal Torture, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.
The Judge's decisions shocked many in the courtroom, after his conviction called Loggins' actions "depraved and sadistic." Friday, the Judge said "[Sire] was not some valuable fancy show dog belonging to another. It was not a neighbor boy's dog, it was not an elderly person's companion...We do not have a statewide problem with this kind of crime." It was that statement that struck many animal advocates the hardest. "The fact that he owned the dog he got a lighter sentence, for that, that dog has no less pain felt no less pain than any other dog that's out there," said Brenda Iwen of Noah's Hope Animal Rescue.
Loggins' wife and attorney pleaded in court for a shorter sentence than the two-year maximum the prosecutor pushed for. "He's a very good father. I do need him at home. He takes care of the kids while I'm sleeping so I can work at night," said Loggins' wife, Rochelle.
Animal rescuer Terry Mann said the sentence wasted valuable time and money. "We have to start as a community to change this, and today we didn't do very good." She added she's more motivated than ever to continue her fight against abuse. "We'll be watching," she said, "we'll be watching, and you'll be seeing us."
Loggins will serve 18 months probation after serving his time behind bars. He must report to the Woodbury County Jail by 6:00pm on February 17th.

Bobby Loggins received 30 days in jail and a $650.00 fine, which was suspended by the judge, for the killing of his dog Sire. Loggins will have to report to the Woodbury County jail on February 17 to start serving his sentence.
The judge called Loggins' actions depraved and sadistic, saying Loggins held Sire with his bare hands while beating him.
A witness testified at Loggins trial that after a day of booze and marijuana Loggins went "way too far" punishing Sire when he peed on the carpet.
The case drew outrage from Siouxland animal activists. Loggins faced up to two years in prison.
