Learning Robotics Through Legos

Posted:

Einstein, Newton, Edison. As they say, great minds think alike. And Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa's next generation of great minds merged to showcase their passion for science, math, and robotics, one brick at a time.

"I never knew you could make robots out of legos."

Practice makes perfect and it's here where a year's worth of practice culminates.

"You guys ready?"

"Three, two, one, lego! Come on, Matt!"

The Psychotic Lego Freaks, or PLF as they're known, are one of twenty teams competing at WIT's FIRST Lego League regional qualifier.

"Because they're doing it at such a young age, it really just is tweaking their curiousity more than anything else."

From robot matches to teambuilding, through legos, they're learning the *building* blocks of life.

"We all have to make decisions for the team and we can't make a decision if we don't all work together."

"They like me for who I am, they don't want me to change."

And when it comes to the competition, they're all business.

"We're pretty much just messing around but when it comes to that, we're really serious."

It's not about winning or losing, it's about fun, and perhaps, the future.

"I think it lets me open doors because now maybe i'm going to want to be an engineer."

Saturday's regional was one of five across the state of Iowa, where teams are competing for a chance to go to the state competition in Ames in January.
