Andrew Orellana Trial Begins

Posted:

(DAKOTA CITY, NE) The trial for a South Sioux City man accused of murder began Monday. 30-year-old Andrew Orellana is accused of shooting Joaquin Guerrero 12 years ago on October 7, 1997.

Now, more than a decade later, he's facing a first degree murder charge. Opening statements began after jury selection wrapped up, trimming down 85 candidates to 12 jurors and an alternate.

Two assistant Attorney Generals are helping Dakota County Attorney Kim Watson with the case. They plan to prove Orellana shot Guerrero in retaliation to a gang shooting two days before. Judge William Baker says the trial could take two weeks.

Orellana showed up wearing a shirt and tie instead of in handcuffs and a jail jumpsuit. He'll be held at the Dakota County Jail for the duration of his trial.
