(CORRECTIONVILLE, IA) Darrell Stevens will tell you he's the only man who goes hunting in his house slippers. He still hasn't hit a deer but when he does his friends will make him haul it out.
Until this fall, Darrell Stevens had never gone hunting. And some people may think a wheelchair would keep him from trying.
"He is a normal hunter. He just has some obstacles he needs a little help with," says Randy Cormeny, St. John's Pastor.
Pastor Randy Cormeny is not one of those people. He knows Darrell can do anything he puts his mind to.
"If he's crazy enough to ask me, I'm crazy enough to do it," says Darrell Stevens, novice hunter.
With limited mobility, Darrell needed special equipment to shoot a gun. Anonymous donations helped the pastor purchase a Knight in-line muzzle loader.
"Darrell moves a joystick like you have on your computer game right, left, up or down," says Cormeny.
When he's ready, Darrell sucks on a tube and the vacuum pulls the trigger.
"Bullseye!"
Not even advanced MS will keep Darrell from a perfect shot.
"My legs went first. Got to where I couldn't stand up at all. Then my arms went. Can't even scratch my own nose," says Stevens.
Darrell was diagnosed with MS 12 years ago and has never let it control his life.
"I'm not the type to just sit still. I like to go," says Stevens.
"Why not go out and have fun and do what you love when we have the technology and the people who love you enough to make that happen?" asks Cormeny.
His friends may not cut him any slack -
"You hit a deer, you're hauling it out. We'll have to get you a motorized wheelchair and a tow hook, but you got to drag it out," says Cormeny.
From the specialized equipment to the wheelchair accessible bus that transports Darrell from his home at Willow Dale in Battle Creek, it's those same friends who make it possible.
"Nothing's impossible when you have wonderful friends to help you out and the technology to do it," says Cormeny.
Whoever said someone couldn't go hunting without the use of their arms and legs never met Darrell Stevens and his friends.
"This whole world's nothing but friends. We love each other and that's what makes things turn," says Stevens.
Darrell says the next thing he plans to do is shoot a bow and arrow. Pastor Cormeny created
Friends Without Boundaries for Darrell but is offering his equipment and services to anyone who wants to hunt, so long as they can provide transportation.
