Local Entrepreneurs get Chance to Sink or Swim

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, IA -

Thursday night local entrepreneurs got the chance to see if their business ideas would sink or swim.

It was the third annual "Swimming with the Sharks" competition at Briar Cliff University.

College aged entrepreneurs got the chance to pitch business ideas to a panel of judges, in hopes of winning some cash to kick start those businesses.

New this year, the general public also got a chance to win some cash.

The goal of the competition: keep young minds local.

"Stopping the brain drain," says Judy Thompson, a Business Administration Professor at Briar Cliff University. "If we can get young people, college students to start their business in Siouxland, then hopefully they will stick around."

The college level competition had the chance to win $5,000. The general public was pitching to win up to $4,100.
